my initial test result shows that Bing is as good as Google when displaying relevant search results. Google might be having a tough competitor with Microsofts own search engine.

If ‘Yahoo Japan’ is mainly owned by Softbank, and they are using Overture search results, then they are basically independent from the ‘Yahoo’ that has done this deal with Microsoft. Therefore, I don’t see any reason why they would switch to Bing anytime soon.

In addition, Yahoo Japan search results must be satisfactory to Japan users as they are the market leader here. I imagine they will think ‘If it aint broke, dont fix it.’

If however they do switch to Bing, and Bing place emphasis on keywords in the URL, then its a nice opportunity for SEO because you do not often see Kanji keywords in URLs.

  3. Hi Zac

You make a valid point about “if it ain’t broke dont fix it”.
But I wouldn’t bet the farm on it. There are a few things we don’t know yet.

For example, to what extent does(did) Overture Japan have some kind of search technology sharing agreement their former parent company? Yahoo Japan might not want to carry Overture Japan’s research and development costs alone indefinitely.

Another factor is to what extent Bing’s features become popular here.
Yahoo Japan might consider its easier to jump on the Bing platform than spend the money to develop similar features in Overture Japan.

And its true that we don’t see many kanji based URLs but there are some rather powerful reasons for not doing so either.

  4. Microsoft Bing would be the closet competitor of Google. but i still use Google because it shows more relevant results on the serp.

    I would have to agree.
If you do a search using keywords “tokyo web design” and
compare results of the two search engines using Bingle, you
    will see an interesting comparision.

Google’s results are all broadly relevant.
Bing on the other hand returns 6 results in the top 10 with
no relevance, and a couple of questionable listings.

i have been evaluating the search results of Microsoft Bing compared to Google and they are comparable. Bing gives almost the same relevant search results just like Google.

Bing search engine gives almost the same search results as Google. Looks like Google will now have a tough competition when it comes to search engine technology.

  8. Jade says:

Bing does give search results much like Google but i would have to say that Google still gives more relevant search results.

i have been using the BING search engine for a couple of weeks. it seems to be as good as Google but for some reason i would still want to stick with Google search engine.
